‘The Floor’ considers the impact that long-standing chronic mental or physical illness has on how we occupy space. Based on the artist’s relationship with mental illness, the painting depicts how even the most comforting and familiar of spaces become overwhelming and create a sense of being trapped or pulled down. Motifs from everyday life are used to illustrate this understanding of space and mental illness.
