This is my second painting of Ann. When diagnosed with breast cancer, Ann showed incredible bravery in posing for paintings documenting the changes to her body. This work shows her healed mastectomy scar. I aimed to convey the poignant emotions of Ann's experience, as well as the contemplation of time and the finite nature of life. Yet, more than anything, I wanted to communicate with an individual who feels and suffers, as do we all. I work in oils, building complex layers of marks and tones to recreate living flesh on canvas.
