Mary Mena

For as long as I can remember, I gained motivation for art by expressing my feelings and experiences. I do not hesitate to make my art dark, using themes such as depression and suicide, which are issues that have been battling me since a young age. When individuals see my work to know that they are not alone; and someone can speak up when no one else has. As an artist, I strive to inspire my viewers and impact the closed-minded.

After creating her first series of depression drawings, Inside the Darkness, Mary was moved by how individuals became more comfortable sharing similar stories. She then achieved her Associate of Arts degree at Montgomery College. The Artist continued her art journey by earning a Bachelor's degree in Studio Art at the University of Maryland College Park. Her work has been in many school exhibitions, as well as being displayed at VisArts Next Gen in 2020, Maryland Art Place in Silent Actions in 2023 and 2024, and the summer of 2024 at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Solomons, MD.
