Harriet Silverstein
I am profoundly inspired by the nuances of natural color and light, particularly in how they articulate organic forms, textures, and hues. The vivid daylight of South Florida, with its intense brightness and the rich deep, shadows it casts, serves as a constant source of inspiration.. From a distance, my pieces present a strong graphic impression; however a closer look reveals intricate layers of color and lines, animated by numerous spontaneous strokes. My subject matter is invariably drawn from the natural world. When selecting artistic subjects, my mind naturally gravitates toward large, interrelated shapes, interpreting nature as a dynamic, living puzzle.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, I was raised in Syosset, NY, on Long Island, and I loved art from an early age. I was selected for honors programs at Hofstra University and Cornell University while in high school. I am an honors graduate of Brown University (BA Cum Laude, Honors in History and Art); the State University of New York at Albany (MA, Painting and Printmaking), and L'Academie des Beaux-Arts in Strasbourg, France. My work has been widely exhibited and commissioned in the USA and abroad.
Teaching experience includes Hofstra University, Queens College, and the Oncology Unit at Cleveland Clinic Hospital.
