Debra Soule
My paintings are realistic images that convey an emotion or capture a moment that is often fleeting in real life, but that exemplifies an overlooked facet of who we are or wish to be. They are dream images or imagined situations, some of which speak to embedded cultural beliefs, moments of heartfelt contemplation, and others that are just playful. I often combine landscape, animal, and human images that speak to our relationships with our planet and the natural world. Soaring birds are analogous to the soaring of the human soul.
My work has been exhibited in juried shows in Canada and the United States, focusing on portrait and wildlife commissions. I was recently selected as a Distinguished Artist in the Portrait edition, February 2021, of Art Ascent magazine, and I was awarded a Talent Show prize in the 2023 International Juried Art Competition for Figurative work at the Art Show International Gallery. Portraiture, human emotion, and our relationship with avian wildlife dominate my work. My paintings are a composite of images I encounter or recall providing a hopeful perspective despite the current state of our world.
